Languages for Tourism

This short programme is aimed at learners at an intermediate level of French and beginner level of German, Spanish and Italian, who are either working or training to work in the UK tourism industry. The modules have been developed to assist those learners to acquire appropriate foreign language skills to welcome overseas visitors more effectively. It differs from other Languages for Tourism courses which, in the main, are designed to assist British tourists or tourist organisers travelling abroad. These modules received the European Award for Languages in 2004.

This is an interactive, self-study course and comprises four main topics:
Tourist Information Tourist Attractions
Accommodation Provision Travel and Transport

The scenarios and dialogues offer authentic situations with appropriate language structures and phrases. There are tasks set to enable you to practise and rehearse what has been learnt and suggested answers are provided. A glossary of unfamiliar words is given and explanations of the language used. There are attractive graphics and computerised 'game' exercises to complement recordings. In most cases, the written script can be viewed at the same time as the recorded speech is played. Learners are strongly advised, however, to listen to any speech without seeing the printed word, thus imitating the 'reality' of situations, before resorting to reading support.

The 'Signposts' section leads the learner to additional language support materials and agencies. A folder of printed materials to complement this CD-Rom is also available.

What follows are sample pages from the 'Languages for Tourism' modules - the learner is equipped with the vocabulary required to complete the exercises by working through the material, not featured as part of these samples, leading up to the pages concerned.

When a flashing 'i' symbol appears in the top left hand corner of the screen, click on it to read instructions for completing the exercise, if they are not given on the page itself.
