Thinking skills are an essential element of success in learning and in the development of a wide range of transferable skills, including employability and lifelong learning. The introduction of Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills in the new Diplomas has brought the development of thinking skills more sharply into focus. This session examines the theory and development of thinking skills and ways in which they can be integrated into learning and teaching.

THE FACILITATOR

 

Peter Scales is a Senior Lecturer in Lifelong Learning Initial Teacher Training at the University of Derby. He teaches on the full-time and part-time postgraduate and professional DTLLS programme and on the PGCE (HE) programme which provides training for new lecturers at the University of Derby.

 

Prior to teaching at the university Peter was employed for more than twenty years as a main grade lecturer in further education where, in addition to teacher training, he taught English Language, Communication Studies and Media Studies.

 

He is the author of ‘Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector’ published by Open University Press. This textbook has quickly become a set text for courses at many colleges and universities in the UK and has also sold in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

 

Peter is a Fellow of the Institute for Learning.

TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION

 

Robins Wood House Conference Centre is located in Aspley, about 2½ miles to the north west of Nottingham city centre.  It is easily accessible from the M1 (Junctions 25 & 26), and there are public transport links from the city centre. The nearest train station is Nottingham.  For those coming by car a location map can be found on www.emfec.co.uk.  Robins Wood House has a large car park.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

 

Completion and return of the Booking Form constitutes a contract between yourselves and EMFEC.  Cancellations must be made in writing at least seven working days before the course is due to start or you will be charged at the FULL cost.  Substitutions are welcome and can be made at any time.  EMFEC reserves the right to cancel or alter the course for reasons beyond its control.
